Not one for Christmas Albums to be 100% honest, as I find most are trying to push a new single or are just really cheesy sounding. I had the chance to listen to You Better Watch Out, a collaboration between John Driskell Hopkins and the Joe Gransden Big Band. But let me tell ya, this is exactly what a Christmas album should be.
These are easily some of my favourite Christmas classics done so incredibly well, and there’s just something about John’s voice that seems to capture that Christmas spirit. You may know John Driskol Hopkins (AKA Hop) as one of the founding members of the Zac Brown Band. I have been listening to John’s other stuff as well and he is such a talented musician and it just resonates on You Better Watch Out. This is his second Christmas Album. Back in 2015 he released In The Spirit – A Celebration of the Holidays, which was done with an orchestra and was a bit more on the slow side of things. But, with You Better Watch Out, John and Joe turn it up a notch or two…
Kicking the album off is a rockin’ classic in Santa Claus is Coming To Town. The band sounds great and as mentioned before John’s voice is so well suited to this collection of songs. A couple of my other favourites are I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, which featured Joe Gransden also joining John on the mic, and a great banter between the two that gave me a chuckle. The other one I can say I may have hit repeat on a few times was Here Comes Santa Claus, which has fellow ZBB member Clay Cook join in, and the guitar licks are something magic is made out of. All in all I would strongly suggest if you are looking for that great Christmas album to keep your toes tapping this Holiday Season, You Better Watch Out is the one you wanna snag — that’s a promise.
