REVIEW: CMW SHOWCASE #2 with Krysta Lee, Ben Klick, Dick Rodan, and TJ King.
Well, the CMW Showcase on Wednesday was so good, I figured I’d head back down and take in another on Thursday. And Damn! It was solid!
Two nights in a row the music has been fantastic. We have been blessed with some outstanding performances during Canadian Music Week 2017 so big congrats to the organizers, promoters, venues and artists. Well done so far! I also must apologize to one of the acts Thursday night, Aces Wylde. I was a little under the weather heading downtown to Boots and Bourbon at the start of the evening, and I tried to gut it out but ended up having to head home just before Aces Wylde took the stage. So I’ll definitely make a point of getting out to see them next time they are around, for sure!
The rest of the evening was simply excellent. Things kicked off with a great tempo when Krysta Lee took the stage. Krysta, dressed in black with a black cowboy hat and her band delivered a fine set of solid music, and by the smiles on stage she was having fun. Great personality and voice, and with Paul Chapman on guitar and Dan McGrath on fiddle she definitely had some talent filling out the sound. This was just what I needed to perk me up as the night got started. She ran through some of the songs she explained that were favourites of hers and she did them justice, that’s for sure.
Next up was Ben Klick, performing solo. Just a man and his guitar and it was great. Ben has a really smooth and confident style to his music and he had the Boots and Bourbon patrons captivated by his songs. He seems very humble on stage, and delivers a straight forward, honest performance that hit all the right notes. It was nice to see things changed up a bit, a full band one set, then a solo performance the next. Ben did a great job and I look forward to seeing him again.
Changing things up again, we were treated to the talented and humorous Dick Rodan. This is a 6 piece band who is all about the party! If you wanted to sing along or just drink along, then Dick Rodan have the music for you. Some great lyrics and banter were the order of the day, along with the band stopping for a few seconds to throw back some shots before continuing. They killed their set and the crowd were loving it as well. When the band finished their last number, the crowd broke into an impromptu “One More Dick” chant. It was hilarious, but definitely appropriate. Go check them out when they play near you!
My last act to see was Halifax performer TJ King. Once again, things simplified a bit as it was just TJ and his guitar on stage. He has a great ability to chat up the crowd and to introduce each song with a little story or anecdote. This wasn’t TJ’s first time playing at Boots and Bourbon and he usually has his band play with him. But tonight we got just TJ, his guitar and his singing. It was another solid set of music and he had the crowd clapping and singing as well, so great job TJ. Would like to see him with his full band too.
That was my night. As already stated I had to leave at this point, but I was thoroughly entertained and loved what every artists brought out for CMW 2017.
Many thanks once again to Canadian Music Week, Boots and Bourbon, Work Late PR, and of course all the artists for having us out.
