Corey’s Top Shows of 2016

It has been an extremely busy 2016 for me and with over 38 shows in the books and over 120 artists it isn’t easy to dwindle that top 10 list.   But I though I should atleast give it my best so here they are.

10. – Brantley Gilbert – Blackout Tour – Bud Gardens – London, ONT

This was one of the shittiest nights outside all winter however.  The show the boys put on in London that night was fantastic.  Brantley Gilbert, Canaan Smith and Michael Ray brought one hell of a show that night. And kicks off my Best Shows of 2016 post.

9. Brothers Osborne – Phoenix Concert Theatre – Toronto, ONT – Nov 10th, 2016

It’s no secret I love LIVE music.  And the first time I saw Bros. Osborne open for Darius Rucker a couple summers back I knew I had to see them headline a show and when the bus pulled into The Phoenix it was a must that I see these boys perform.  And perform they did.   So much passion and love for music in this band it oozes through the music and really keeps you in awe for 70+ min.  Damn good show.  And the icing on the cake was to have James Barker Band open the night up was just incredible.

8. I Mother Earth – Phoenix Concert Theatre – Toronto, ONT – June 3rd, 2016

This was the first official show with Edwin back in the mix and let me tell you the place was packed the energy was high and the band fucking ROCKED IT!  I was like a 16 year old just totally jamming out to each note the guys blasted over the sound system and a light show that was meant for an arena performance only made the show that much more memorable!

7. Justin Moore – Casino Rama – Rama, ONT – May 7, 2016

This one ranks top 10 for a couple reasons.   1. Anytime an artists invites you back to the bus for a beverage before the show you kinda have a feeling it should be a beauty.  2.  Justin Moore is what Country music is all about.  He sings with passion.  Loves his fans.  And just brings a hell of a show to the stage.  And well the other is I captured one of my favourite pics of 2016 at this show.  (Gonna have to wait for our Best Pics of 2016 for that one)

6. Garth Brooks – Canadian Tire Centre – Ottawa, ONT – April 1st, 2016

Hard not to have one of these shows in the top 10.  I caught a show in Hamilton and Ottawa and Ottawa’s experience was pretty amazing.  Sitting only 10 rows from the stage and a crowd that had been waiting for more than 19 years to see Garth come back and light up the Canadian Tire Centre was something special.  Anyone that took in one of his dates over the last year will agree it truly is an experience.

5. The Cadillac Three – Cowboys – London, ONT – Sept 2nd, 2016

One of my favourite bands ever graced the stages of Cowboys for the bands very first ever Canadian Headlining gig.  Yes they had played in Canada a few times before but nothing headlining and giving the Canadian fans a full 70+ Min set to get excited about.  They did not disappoint and we knew it wasn’t an easy show as Jaren had just lost a family member earlier that week and had just made it to the show moments before they hit the stage.   If you haven’t seen The Cadiallic Three yet let me tell you something.  GET TO A SHOW!  Unreal performance for one of the best 3 piece bands playing today.

4. Kip Moore – GM Centre – Oshawa, ONT – October 15, 2016

Another one of those tours that was solid from start to finish.  Meghan Patrick, Jon Pardy and Kip Moore totally threw it down in Oshawa that night.  BIG Fan of Kip, Jon & Meghan so I would have to say this show may have been the best TOUR of 2016.  3 amazing artists one UNREAL night.

3. The Tragically Hip – First Ontario Centre – Hamilton, ONT – August 16, 2016

This was the last LIVE show that I will likely ever get to see The Tragically Hip perform a full set.  The emotions were at a high just walking into the building.   But when the music started the crowd came together as one and experienced one of thee most powerful performances I had ever witnessed live.  It wasn’t the best HIP set I had ever seen but it was just more about the experience.

2. TIE – Fort McMurray Benefit Concert – Phoenix Concert Theatre – June 9th

This night was Magical to be honest with so many fantastic artists coming to support such a great cause.  With the likes of Tim Hicks, Jason Blaine, Meghan Patrick, Cold Creek County and so many others made one hell of a night.  Every person in the Phoenix that night agreed that it was something special.  And yes it was something I personally had some involvement in organizing but it really was a night I will never forget.

2. TIE – Headstones – Maxwell’s Concert Hall – Waterloo, ONT – Dec 17, 2016

Not really sure I can describe this one other than it fucking ROCKED!  Hugh and the boys put out easily one of the best performances of 2016 with an in your face, lets do this night.  I don’t think one person left that venue and went “Well Shit that was Ok.”  Nope.  They all left with their ears ringing and the headstones tunes cranked in the car the whole way home wanting to relive the night.

1. The Tragically Hip – K-ROCK Centre – Kingston, ONT – Aug 20th – 2016

Nope, I wasn’t one of the lucky few that made it into the KRock Centre that August night.   But I was one of the Millions sitting watching from start to finish as the CBC Broadcast one of the most memorable nights of 2016.   I laughed, I cried, I introduced my kids to one of the best Rock and Roll acts in Canadian history.  I also introduced them to one of my favourite frontmen Gord Downie.   You didn’t need to be there that night.  You just needed to be watching.   It was a night that Canada united to make some of the best memories of 2016.
