Luckily, it wasn’t 30 Below outside the River Run Center in Guelph on Wednesday night when Canadian Country sensation, Brett Kissel, rolled his, “Ice, Snow and 30 Below Tour”, into town as it crosses Ontario, Quebec and then off to eastern Canada this winter.
Brett Kissel and the team at The CMAO ran a contest to select local talent to, “Kick It With Kissel”, on the shows for him, this tour. In Guelph, we were treated to a couple of Ontario’s best up and coming Country singers. Alessia Cohle and Ben Hudson got the honor of taking the stage ahead of The Canadian Kid, Brett Kissel, on this night. Each night on the tour, it’s a different opener, giving a lot of up and coming artists the chance to be heard and play on a big stage.
Alessia Cohle was the first to take the stage to the packed house. She is currently promoting her first track that has been released to country radio, “Talk to Me”. I think we are going to be seeing and hearing alot more of Alessia in the near future as she has that great country sound.
Ben Hudson is no stranger to the big stage. I first saw Ben play last summer at CMT Fest in near by Kitchener ON. With his distinctive deep country voice he had the crowd singing along and getting fired up for the party that was melting any memories of the winter weather outside. Keep your ears peeled for his deep smooth country voice as I think Ben is going to be playing, all over, this summer.
After two amazing acoustic sets, it was time to get down to business. It was the moment we were all waiting for. Brett Kissel hit the stage running, kicking the show off with his hit, “Airwaves “. The show rolled along with Brett busting out a new track for us to hear and judging by the crowds reaction, they loved it, but are there any bad Brett Kissel tracks? I think not!
I am a big fan of Brett and this was actually my first time catching an entire show. I have seen him play a couple of short sets during the CCMA Awards Country Music week in London this past September, but this was the first time I got to see a full headlining set by the country star. I was not only excited to see the show, but Brett is one of my favorite artists to shoot live. He is so charismatic on stage and it translates to amazing images every single time!
Some highlights of the show were hearing him tell the stories of the songs ahead of time, and the meaning of them for him and what inspired some of the biggest Brett Kissel hits you hear on your local country radio station. His current single is touching a lot of hearts. When I saw him sing it live during the CCMA Awards show, I can tell you there weren’t many dry eyes around the photographers photo area or in the crowd surrounding us. In Guelph it was no different. He invited a young couple, who is due to be married in the next few weeks, to the stage as this song has very special meaning to them. Brett sang them, “I Didn’t Fall In Love With Your Hair”, which they will be dancing to on their big wedding day in the near future.
Through out the show, Brett made sure his fans in Guelph got to sing along with all the hits, breaking into a couple of cover tunes, including, “Calling Baton Rouge”, by his idol, Garth Brooks. Brett is a 100% true entertainer, making sure not a single person was left sitting in their seats. There is a reason he was crowned the 2016 CCMA Fan’s Choice award winner, an honor he is very proud of. He has the trophy with him, at the shows, for fans to get a picture with. So, don’t think the show is over when he leaves the stage. I saw Brett spend over an hour greeting his fans, singing autographs, and taking pictures after the show, in the lobby.
This is a show you don’t want to miss as his tour continues across the eastern part of Canada! There are still a few tickets for certain shows in Ontario, but you better get them quick if you want to be part of the, “Ice, Snow and 30 Below Tour”.
