No Regrets with Tom Cochrane in Kitchener..
This past Tuesday night Tom Cochrane along with Red Rider and new comers Nice Horse brought the Mad Mad World 25 Tour to Kitchener’s acoustically sound Centre in the Square. It’s hard to believe this album is 25 years old now. I recall an interview that I did with Tom a couple years back and telling him how when I backedpacked across Europe in my late teens that Mad Mad World (on cassette) was one of the two albums that joined me on that journey. And to sit and hear the album in it’s entirety like I have so many times before, only this time it was live – how it was really meant to be enjoyed.
The night kicked off with the ladies from Nice Horse filling in for a very ill Meghan Patrick who has been accompanying Tom on most of the dates on the #MMW25 tour. The ladies of Nice Horse had opened a few shows for Tom on the west coast dates and just so happened to be in Toronto this week and were able to fill in for the always entertaining Miss Patrick. The girls did a fantastic job getting the night rolling. With great harmonies and an energetic stage presence, Nice Horse are a group of ladies that bring a new kick to the country sound. Be sure to check out the girls music HERE.
After a short break, a montage of video and images appeared on the screens along the back of the stage, showing images of a young Tom and video footage from previous shows. As the video ended Tom and Red Rider took to the stage to a roar of applause. The crowd at the Centre in the Square were excited to see one of Canada’s iconic performers rock out for the next 75+ Minutes, and rock he did.
Kicking the night off with a spirited rendition of Mad Mad World you got a pretty good feeling that this was just gonna be one of those nights you really didn’t want to end. As the trip down memory lane continued there were a few songs that really stuck out.
The live version of All The Kings Men that was performed flawlessly. The vocals of Tom and the guitar that made you feel like it was a show sitting around a campfire. Telling stories and having a few beverages with friends. Not every artist can make you feel like they have invited you into the studio and hearing that raw sound for the first time even though he may have sung that song a thousand times before. You could feel the passion behind this one and it made it one of the stand outs of the night. The other one that had me wishing I was sitting dockside in the Muskoka over looking a beautiful sunset was Good Times. I love the connection with this song. And Tom just nailed it. If I could pick one song that Tom would perform for a Mason Jar Session for us at #TheBus it would have to be Good Times. An incredible night of music and memories! It’s funny when you hear a song and it takes you back to a time that really doesn’t seem that long ago. Hard to believe that Mad Mad World is 25. It really is a timeless album.
I want to thank Tom, Live Nation and the always fantastic folks at Centre in the Square for having us. We can’t wait to see Tom later this summer up at the RECENTLY ANNOUNCED big summer wrap up Lucknow Music in the Fields taking place in Lucknow Ontario at the end of August.
