It was picture perfect. The sun was going down on the first of many hot nights ahead for this years 159th running of The Queens Plate at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto on Friday night This wasn’t your typical big show by one of the most elite entertainers in country music. The crowd was a perfect size with what I would estimate in and around that 6500 took in the concert over the course of the evening. The night kicked off with an artists new to me and many in attendance, but boy did he impress. Dan Tyminski took the stage just before 8pm and boy can he sing. It’s a great mix of traditional country mixed with a bit of the newer sound. On the drive home I streamed in the new album Southern Gothic and Mr Tyminski earned himself a new fan on this night. I would strong suggest checking him out. The album is great but the live sound is just fire.
When the Knight Rider theme kicked in it was time to kick things up a notch with the man of the hour Mr. Brad Paisley. Now I have had a chance to photography many artists over the last 5 years but Brad was never one of them. It was brief but well worth the wait. Kicking the set off with Last Time and wrapping up the night with Alcohol he managed to jam all the fan favourites in between. This was my first time also taking in the Queens Plate and have to say it was a really great experience. From the food to the beverages the crowd had lots to choose from but the Canadians love their poutine and let me tell that line never seemed to fade.
Let’s get back to how good Paisley was. From handing out a guitar to a couple young lads up front to jammin’ out with Carrie Underwood via mobile phone this fella knows how to please. From hosting the CMA Awards to his judging abilities on The Gong Show Paisley knows how to entertain. The folks at Woodbine were lucky to land such a great artist to kick off the big weekend and we want to thank both Brad and Woodbine for having us out. And a special shout out to the folks over at MooTV who did a great job on the production side of the show!
