The Red Hot Chili Peppers were definitely red hot and smokin’ as they blew away the SOLD OUT crowd at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre Saturday night.
These guys absolutely killed it! The buzz was palpable as we awaited RHCP to take the stage, and they delivered in spades. This was such a high energy show and the music was firing on all cylinders. They kicked things off with a little jam session to get things started, and then tore into Can’t Stop. It was electric! When I shoot a show, I have a job to do. And I stay focused and professional on that job. But I do have to admit I was rockin out a little bit to this show while I was photographing the Peppers. It was so good. And I have to say that The Red Hot Chili Peppers were a bucket list shoot for me.
There are a few reasons for the sold out arena, and the big hype here for the Peppers. They have a huge following and if you witness one of their shows you will know why. Over 60 Million albums sold, and an action packed dynamic stage show shows their strength. The music just resonates with so many people. Lead man Anthony Kiedis sounded great. He was wearing a brace or cast boot on his left leg, but it didn’t really stop him from getting around on stage. And bass player Flea was in constant motion. This guy was everywhere. He was up in the air, he was down on his knees. He never stops moving and it makes for a great look on stage (although at times you feel that as a photographer you are chasing him around LOL). The stage set was pretty visually amazing. Huge video panels created the backdrop, and the band employs an amazing light display with great effects. I must say, there are a lot of bands who could take a lesson from the Chili Peppers when it comes to lighting. There was none of this full red wash, or extreme backlighting with little light up front. These guys are extremely well lit everywhere on stage which means their fans actually get to see them and the photographers can create some nice images as well. I commend them. It was amazing.
This is The Getaway Tour in support of the album of the same name that was released last June on Warner Bros Records, and it’s hard to differentiate between this tour and last. I mean, this band just keeps playing shows and it seems they hardly ever take a break. The band has been out on the road, basically since April 2016 playing shows in every month since that time, and it is going to continue as they play their way through Canada and the U.S. before heading over to Europe for a while and then ending up at Rock In Rio in September. That’s quite a haul. But, what else can you expect from one of the biggest rock acts in the last couple of decades, and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductees!
The Chili Peppers were definitely Red Hot!
Many thanks to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and their team, as well as Live Nation Ontario for having us out for this show.
