On Thursday Night Steve Earle rolled into Toronto for a date on the So You Wanna Be An Outlaw Tour. Steve and his band played to a pretty full house at the amazing Danforth Music Hall. It’s a venue like The Danforth that music like Steve Earle’s is made for.
The night started off with husband & wife duo Mastersons out of New York who have that Alt Country sound and was a great way to get to get the evening kicked off. I didn’t make it for call time to shoot the artist but I can tell you it was a solid set. They had a few vinyls for sale upfront that I happened to snag a copy of Transient Lullaby which is a solid piece of music from start to finish.
The duo left the stage for a short break only to rejoin Steve and the rest of his band during his set. Mr. Earle hit the stage to a thunderous roar from the crowd and immediately broke into the title track from the new album So You Wanna Be An Outlaw. This album is back to the Roots / Country sound that Earle has been playing for 40+ years. As the night rolled on there were a few highlights for me personally.
This was my first time getting to see Steve and have to admit getting to hear him rip through Copperhead Road was defiantly the icing on the cake. Getting a chance to hear The Galway Girl and a spirited rendition of 96’s Hardcore Troubadour were also some pretty fine moments from the set. There was nothing special about the set the band was there and well that’s all that really counted. It was about the music on this night and it did not disappoint. I would also suggest you grabbing Steve’s new album. If you love that Chris Stapleton / Sturgil Simpson / Erik Dylan sound than So You Want To Be An Outlaw is for you!
