We caught up with Tebey just as he was getting back into Canada after a few weeks abroad to talk about the upcoming Charity Golf Tournament. He is hosting this first time event in his hometown of Peterborough, Ontario in order to raise funds for the current Youth Mental Health initiative from Peterborough Family Health.
1. Now living in Nashville how did you get involved in this event?
I was up in Peterborough last year for a show on the First Come, First Served Tour when I ran into my friend Laura who I knew from Boots & Hearts. We got to talking and somehow the conversation evolved into my interest in hosting a charity golf tournament in my hometown.
2. Mental Health is a tough subject for many to discuss. How has it affected you or maybe family in the past?
I’ve been extremely open with anyone who’ll listen about my struggles with depression and anxiety. It’s been part of my life since early adolescence. I know first hand how it affects not only the person suffering with the illness, but also those around them.
3. When writing music its a real “mental game” trying to come up lyrics and the beat. How do you think things might be different if you weren’t healthy to write & inspire?
I think the fact that I suffer from anxiety and depression makes it that much more difficult to be creative. Writing songs is extremely mentally taxing, so it can be quite a struggle for me at times. But I’ve learned how to cope.
4. What can we expect to see during the event?
This is our first year, so I’m sure we’ll be feeling our way through as we go. But aside from playing a round of golf at an amazing course (The Quarry), there’s a silent auction that I’m pretty excited about. Peterborough native Mike Fisher (from the Nashville Predators) gave me a signed jersey, and we also have signed items from the Toronto Maple Leafs among other things. Molson has come on board to provide product, and there’s some great catering planned for both lunch and dinner.
5. What can we look forward in 2017 with Tebey and new music.
I’ve been on a little bit of a hiatus as of late, traveling and enjoying time with my family. I have two small kids, so the time I get to spend with them is precious. As for new music, I’m hoping to have something out by the end of the year. After we wrapped the First Come, First Served Tour last year, I made a conscious effort not to rush the next record. I really wanted to take my time and that’s exactly what I’m doing.
Just a side note on the tournament, there are still have a few foursomes available for May 31st at The Quarry, and we have some fantastic auction items as well that include:
– CMT Chevy Top 20 Closed Audience Taping with Paul McGuire and guest artist Meet and Greet for 2 people

– 2 tickets to Tweed Stampede with a meet and greet with Chad Brownlee
