If you didn’t have tickets to The Horseshoe in Toronto for the night of November 5th, you were unsurprisingly met by a ‘Sold Out’ sign at the door. With a lineup that consisted of Evangeline Gentle, Kirty and the woman who is quickly taking over the world, Terra Lightfoot, you really should have bought your tickets well in advance.
Luckily we were in the crowd to witness the female lineup captivate the crowd. Evangeline Gentle took the stage first solo with an electric guitar and a beautiful voice. Telling stories with each song she performed, Evangeline quickly drew the audience in and had them front and centre, which is sometimes rare for the first performer of the evening. Ending with an acapella performance of a traditional folk song from her homeland of Scotland, Evangeline was surprised by the reaction of the hollering crowd. Moving forward, that reaction should be expected as it is extremely well deserved.
Kirty and her five member backing band took the stage next to perform tunes from her recently released self titled album. The Orillia native, who also plays in the band The Fast Romantics, has a very distinct sound and musical style. Her soft spoken and soothing vocals are contrasted by the full band accompaniment making for a captivating, complimentary combination that was very obviously adored by the audience.
The lady of the evening who Evangeline Gentle accurately referred to as “Queen Terra” emerged from side stage and before playing a note already had the crowd hooked. Hamilton native Terra Lightfoot has a tangible presence that is undeniable. The crowd sang along to songs from her latest album Every Time My Mind Runs Wild and listened intensely to amazing new songs that Terra and her band shared with The Horseshoe. The woman is a force that just does not stop and is deserving of every single ounce of praise and success that she receives.
